i love big 8's but mine seem to top out in the 40's. So far the bucks that really blow up for me are the spindly mass 140's 3 yr olds that aren't clean straight 4x4's Most of mine do the same. The ones that have mass have short tines and the ones with long tines are pencil horn mass.

A lot of guys think mass scores big but there's usually only 3 to 4" per side between average and big mass on the bigger bucks. Now some bucks with really great mass can have much better mass totals but 3 or 4 inches is much easier to come by with tine length than mass measurements

I'll take length over mass anytime. There's nothing like watching a buck with 11"+ tines come walking through the timber. Those bucks with those tines and 40"+ of mass are the big scorers. But those are rare lol

No I mean do you guess them to decide if you should kill them? I guess everything over 40 just so I know who I shouldn't let walk or just for practice.

Yeah I score guess anything with a decent rack and kinda just make a hit list from there and decide which ones I don't want to shoot. Having a few big deer running around this year, I won't be shooting a 140" My 2015 buck was 144" and he was my main target because I didn't have anything else mature or over 140" on camera. I also try not to shoot anything under 4 1/2 yrs old

I've had years where I didn't have a buck over 150 on any of my cameras and I was after the best ones I had (can't kill what ain't there) I don't do the age thing though, I've had too many guys tell me "nice 3yr old" when I showed them pics of a buck I knew had to be at least 4. If they are big enough I kill them when I get the chance, I don't have enough control to pass shooter bucks hoping they will be monsters. As long as I feel like they are still around I'll hunt for one of those two bigger ones until the week of thanks giving then if I still have my tag a bunch of these other bucks will be on the list.

Yeah the age thing is very hard to go on unless you have had the same buck on camera every year. As far as the "nice 3yr old" I hear that all the time and just go along with it but in my head I'm thinking you have no clue haha A lot of the deer I post, I have no history with so I just try to guess mature or not mature. That's hard sometimes to because some deer are just genetically small bodied

I know some "old buck hunters" that claim they'd walk a 170" 3yr old, they are full of shit
