I shot another doe tonight. She tugged on my heart strings and I ended up feeling really bad. I accidently spine shot her (calm night and she jumped the string) and when she fell I couldn't get a quick follow up shot. She sat there and bawled while I hustled down the tree and I got up on her and put an arrow through both lungs. Took her about 20 seconds to expire after that but being mere feet from her while she was, really got to me. I think I even said "I'm so sorry'!" to her. Geez I'm getting soft the older I get. I've never had a deer get to me like that. I had to walk away for a minute and collect my thoughts. Y'all ever had one get you like that or am I alone? Not a thing wrong with this what so ever . Been there once and hope never to happen again . You ain't right if you don't feel for taking a life ......I thank the Lord every time he let's me take one of his creatures ......

I catch myself all the time in excitement saying "man I'd like to kill that buck" then think, wow, you want to kill him and he's just out there doing what he does. Before these contests I had only killed a few does in 20+ years of hunting and never really liked it. A few years ago I spined a doe that had busted me and came walking back while I was at full draw. I had to get down and shoot her again and I had to walk away. I think when we are touched by emotion after killing it shows the respect we have for the animal. I have often sat in my stand and had those thoughts, I really enjoy deer and deer hunting. . . . . .
Anyway, I know the feeling

I've been there too Canuck! I spined a doe about 8 years ago and she dropped behind a dead fall. No way to get another shot into her. She just laid there and bawled. Seriously sounded like a baby crying. Made me sick to my stomach. I tried to skim an arrow just over the dead fall and missed. Had to climb down and shoot her again point blank, meanwhile she was bawling the whole time until I got that last shot off. I know I said "I'm sorry girl" and just kneeled down beside her. Was uneasy about it for a few days, but like everything else, it passes. Sometimes it's just part of hunting. I would have felt worse if I had felt nothing!!

Pulling the puss card out this weekend. The wife asked me to take the weekend off and help with Xmas crap lol. 3.5 months into the season and this is her first request. If I don't want to sleep on the couch I guess I will live through any of you guys hunting this weekend. Plan to hit it hard from the day after Christmas until we close up on January 31st. I don't plan on ending this season with only one buck for the year! I will put my big boy pants back on next week

I have only been out a few times this week. The temps dropped on Thursday so I snuck out after work only to be skunked. This morning with temps in the 20's, I hoped things would be up and moving. But it was pretty still in the woods. Then I walked around to plan out habitat improvements for next year. Just need to get my father in-law on board with the plan to hinge cut about ten acres of his woods.

Had a little time today to run over to the lease and check some cameras. Had a couple decent bucks on cam but no real pattern to their movement. Suppose to storm and blow hard tonight and tomorrow morning but looks like the rain and wind will quit right before dark so I'm going to slip into the bedroom and see if I can't catch one back in the thick stuff.

Wind wasn't cooperating so went to a patch of public ground this evening instead of my lease. Managed to put a big nanny in the bed of the truck! Freezer is getting full! That makes 4 with the ol' Hoyt!

We finally get an about average temp day hat might get them on their feet and what does in bring with it about a half inch of ice and 40 mph winds it was enough to keep me inside tonight..... The better news is tomorrow it warms right back up to above average temps again lol
