My wife and I moved from Tennessee to Indiana in 2014. Where we were sad to leave TN but it opened more whitetail opportunities for myself and my friends. We rented a 900 sq foot condo 2014 & 2015. The guys didn't complain much but it sucked. We had up to 4 hunters in that little space and someone was on the couch and someone was on the leaky air mattress. My friends come up for 3-12 days depending on their success rates and vacation time.
2014 Hunters: CC (Chrmcroc), Matt (OS2), VT (DrVT)
2014 Results: All new areas and everytime we entered the woods we were sitting in brand new sets. It was a really cool experience. If anything this year told us where not to hunt. VT (DrVT) killed his first ever 10pt, on his first ever Indiana hunt, on a late October morning. We dressed it , showed a 20lb bag of ice into his cavity, and hung him in the storage closet on the condo deck. He was the only one out of the group to fill his Indiana tag that year.
2015 Hunters: CC, Matt, VT ,Macomber
2015 Success: Year Two was much more successful as far as encounters. We reaped the rewards of the prior years experience. You may also remember the weather in late October and early November was terribly hot! We coined that period as "Hunting Hell". Once the weather broke we were on the deer! A few misses and just bad luck kept the group from connecting on several deer. Matt and I packed the Kayaks down for a 3 day 2 night camping trip. It was our first time on this body of water and unbeknownst to us there are hundreds of stumps under the surface. Matt flipped his yak and ended up stripping down on the bank. He still went hunting but we decided to head back to the house to regroup.
As the 2015 hunt winded down I ended up killing a 9pt that was locked down with a doe.
2016 Hunters: CC, Matt, VT , Macomber ,James
2016 Results: I knew it was going to be a great year starting in February! The wife and I bought a 2,350 Sq ft house "OS2 Indiana Headquarters" to replace the dinky condo. Now all of the hunters have their own real bed and room. It is a great moral booster getting a good night's rest and being able to shoot your bow between hunts.
Late October came around and Macomber came up first. We had a great time but didn't have many encounters. But we saw some beautiful country.
VT and CC came up and we started killing deer. 3 hunts in a row we stuck nice deer and we helped retrieve them together. CC's Dad even came up for the week and he was great to have in camp. He even skipped a morning hunt to help me find my buck we left over night.
My 8pt
Vt's 10pt
CC's 8pt
James and Matt came up next. Matt killed a buck that I saw last year and had lost some of his inches. Still great killing an old buck.
All in all, 4 out of 6 of us hunters filled our tags. I hope 2017 tops 2016 and I keep you updated on what we are doing to make it happen!
