Well this is kinda a 4 year saga. As most know it takes time to learn public ground.. Well this particular tract is HUGE, we've spent 4 full days there over the last few years with very little sightings an zero success, trying to learn it. Always optimistic of the big sign, mainly rubs.
While doing some aerial scouting on topo maps this summer I found a area we'd never explored and held 2 amazing looking saddles. So we hung a camera in June an boom the first picture we get is a huge 8 point with 10" brows, along with several other 140" plus bucks. So we know we're onto something.
Well November 10th rolls around an things are prime, probably the best weather morning of the rut we'll have. So me an Ben head in to these 2 saddles. Not thirty minutes in an Ben has had 3 of the big bucks we had on cam come through his saddle but just a little off so no shot, he climbs down an moves trees, but none of the big boys ever came back through.
During this time I've had a really nice young buck an spike come through walking like they don't have a brain all before 8. Well it was pretty quiet until about 10:15 an I look over an basically under me trots a doe up the side of the saddle, all in the same moment I see rack an immediately know he's a shooter with lots of points lol, they're at 40 yards crossing behind me into another holler. I grab bow, swing an draw on the other side of the tree while following him with my pin, I've only got one good hole an he's gone. Kinda windy so I basically scream at him to stop, as he enters my hole, and he slows to stop the arrow is already on its way. Perfect hit, he trots another 20 yards stands for a few seconds an falls over. Come to find out the lots of points I seen was G5s!!! A beautiful main frame 12 point, on public ground. To say I was happy an thankful was an understatement. He was a big fighter to as you can see by the pictures.
I climb down an snap a few pics an head to Ben house to get cart an my lab. I had to only physically drag him about 300 yards til I could load him on cart, which is a life saver!!! Total round trip hauling buck was 3.08 miles. Thanks for following the story.
Good luck, God bless and shoot straight!!
