I strictly hunt high pressure public land and haven't used trail cams for around 5 yrs because the negatives outweighed the positives. Every trip was added pressure, the cameras spooked deer 75% of the time, and I always had to worry about theft or destruction.
Well I've decided to give it another shot and try to approach it a little differently. I'm only starting out with 2 cams (Browning Strike Force HD and a Spypoint that I don't remember the model) and I have some questions. First off is it more beneficial to run them in picture, video, or burst mode? Second, I plan on elevating the cams to help with spooking and theft is this a good idea? Lastly, is there any other tips you can share to help me out?

Make sure there are no limbs to move in front of the cam and make sure it's turned ON with a good card inside. Those 3 things will drive you more crazy than anything else if not done!
I used to hang cams at chest height and always had pic of deer looking at it. I now mount all my cameras 8'-10' and haven't had a pic of deer looking at it since. Brush it in good and spray it down before you leave. Come back here and share pics, lol. That's about all I can think of!!

I take a section of climbing sticks with me on public ground to hang cameras. Mount them up high using the sticks and angle them down. Helps keep somebody with sticky fingers from easily taking them.

I can see it helping with theft by making it a little tougher to get.As far as height I usually hang my cameras waste high and have never had a problem with it spooking deer to the point they didnt return. I've Even had good luck with the old primos cameras the make the "kathunk" when they activate .

I do the same, 2 lone wolf sticks and I put it as high as I can. I run video mode and noticed it made a big difference in not spooking deer. I put one on a smaller tree last year and the winds shook that tree like crazy. Make sure it's big enough lol

Others have said all of this, but this is my process. 1. 1 climbing stick, 1 pair of limb snips, & 1 cam 2. 1 month soak for the cam 3. Take cam home to review pics and make sure everything is working. 4. Move cam to different spot.
* I like this process because I can cover more ground, limit my trips to certain areas with only 2 over 1 month.
