Got to shoot Broadheads at some deer shoulders I saved In the freezer From last season. Some heads did as I expected and some others surprised me a bit. All heads were shot at 63 lbs on 3 matching 436 grain carbon express 350 arrows. Every head was brand new/never shot, And all shots were from 10 yds to minimize misses and shots I would have to redo. Sorry for the long post but here it is.
1) QAD Exodus. Would have to say was the winner out of the heads I tested. Passed straight through the shoulder plate and shattered the leg bone and knuckle. I doubled up 2 back to back shoulder plates on a single sheet of luan and the head passed right through both of them and penetrated 8” into the target. Head was still in tact after those 4 shots so I shot it into 3 sheets of luan. Passed right through. Last was through 4 thin sheets of sheet metal. Same results, went right through. Head still in great shape.
2) Ram cat. Passed through single shoulder plate. Shattered the knuckle and leg bone. Did bend a blade pretty Good with the leg bone and blunted the tip. Passed through the double shoulder and penetrate the target about 2” and passed right through the sheet metal. Got about 3” of penetration in the 3 sheets of luan as well.
I will say, the blades have to be turned perfect to miss the riser and shelf pad at full draw on my bow, but if your arrow tips stick out passed the riser that won’t be an issue. Found that out the hard way after sending the first arrow sailing when it hit the shelf pad upon release.
3) Rocket Sidewinder. Did not do so good. Had to use 3 different heads to complete the test. Passed through single shoulder plate fine. On a knuckle Joint, the entire head bent horribly and broke off 2 blades. It did go through but only by an inch. Didn’t bother with a leg bone shot with the 2nd head. Went right to the double shoulder plates. It did pass through but lost 2 blades in the 2nd shoulder. Used a 3rd head to shoot into the sheet metal and it did pass through but bent 1 blade.
4) Rocket Steelhead. Would be the expandable winner of the test. Passed through single shoulder plate and knuckle. Glanced off the leg bone and bent a blade. Most likely I didn’t hit dead center of the bone but I thought it would have entered the bone, not glanced off to the side of it. It kept going that way though and had good penetration. Passed through the double shoulder plates and the 3 sheets of luan and looked the same as right after the leg bone hit. Blade did not bend any further.
5) Rage. Didn’t do so good either. Had to use 2 heads and still didn’t complete. Passed through the single shoulder plate. On the Knuckle hit, it bent the ferrule and broke the end off of a blade. I skipped the leg bone and went right to the double shoulder plate. It passed through the double plates (Barely) but stuck in the sheet of luan right behind them getting 0 penetration in the target. Bent the crap out of both blade but they didn’t break. The one blade is bent in a half moon coming back towards the head. Did not get out a 3rd head to Shoot the luan or sheet metal.
6) G5 Striker. Did pretty bad. (Surprised me!!) Passed right through the Single shoulder plate but broke off 2 blades and broke the washer behind the blades in the knuckle and just stuck in the luan behind it, 0 penetration into the target. Never made it passed the 2nd shot.
7) Grim Reaper. Was getting down to just pieces of bone at this point but it did pass through a Solid piece of shoulder plate and glanced off a piece of leg bone breaking a blade off. Shoot through the 3 sheets of luan and the other 2 blades stayed in tact.
8) Cheap Chinese fixed blade (my dad bought a few years ago online somewhere) Did Way better than I thought it would. Has cheap looking thin blades That are loose and rattle like crazy. Broke apart a piece of a shoulder plate. Shattered a piece of leg bone and still penetrated about 3” into the target. 1 of blades bent almost flat to the ferrule but held up to 2 shots through the 3 sheets of luan after that. Blades still rattle (lol) but it did much better than some of the other heads.
I will post some pics through Tapatalk here in a minute.
I have to admit, despite the loss of blood and the box of band aids I used, it was lots of fun shooting Broadheads all day.
